Handy hints
Painting
  • It is important to realise that different surfaces require:

    • different paint products
    • different pre-painting treatments
    • and very important - different painting techniques.

  • Exterior surfaces like bricks, masonry or cement render can be coated with two coats of water-based acrylic finish with no sealer required although the surfaces have to be dry.

  • Plasterboard or gyprock does not present many problems for painting, usually two coats of high grade acrylic is sufficient.

  • Timber and timber decking can be done in a number of ways. Doors and door frames can be done in a oil based paint or an acrylic paint. Timber decking can be done in a clear finish to retain that special look of timber.

  • For high traffic areas an oil based paint is recommended and for areas exposed to the sun an acrylic paint is better because of the flexibilty of the paint.

  • VERY IMPORTANT - All surfaces have to be dry, clean and ready for painting.
Fencing and gates
  • Fencing and gates can be done in different materials like aluminium, steel and timber or a combination of materials. Timber is the most popular and traditional material.

  • It is important to make a rough sketch showing:

    • Correct measurements
    • position of fence posts
Repair a hole in a plasterboard wall
  • Cut a square piece of plasterboard of the same thickness as the original
  • Place the new plasterboard over the hole and draw around and mark
  • Cut the bigger hole and place the plasterboard in position
  • Secure with timber on internal sides using nails
  • Apply a thin layer of plaster
  • Apply paper tape
  • Apply a second coat after drying. Drying time may vary depending on thickness of plaster and humidity
  • Sand ready for painting
Waterblasting and exterior cleaning
  • A number of surfaces can be cleaned using water blasting.

  • We strongly recommend that a clear finish be applied to the clean surfaces for good protection and a lasting good look.
